Last week, Ambyint took the stage at the 2018 Global Petroleum Show (GPS). The annual conference and exhibition is one of Calgary’s most highly anticipated events for oil and gas professionals across North America. This year’s turnout did not disappoint, with over 1,000 exhibiting companies and ~50,000 attendees. In addition to maintaining a booth presence over the course of the three-day event, Ambyint hosted three speaking slots and an auxiliary breakfast seminar, successfully keeping Ambyint at top-of-mind throughout the week.

Technical Director, Jesse Filipi presented on Day 1 and 2 of the event, covering the topic ‘Using IoT-Enabled Machine Learning to Autonomously Optimize Rod Pump Setpoints,’ with a special focus on its applications to horizontal wells. The presentation was well-received by its audience, bringing in dozens of interested professionals. “The attendees were noticeably engaged throughout the presentation, and it generated a lot of good follow-up questions after the fact, which reaffirms our belief that we’re onto something here,” Jesse said, referring to the proprietary technology on which he based his talks.
On Day 3, Ambyint’s CTO, Ryan Benoit took the stage to participate in the panel ‘The Digital Revolution: Machine Learning’ on Day 3, which examined some increasingly pressing topics such as how AI can be used to increase efficiencies and production in the oil & gas industry, what types of security threats should be considered when investing in AI technologies, and how countries and companies around the world are currently using machine learning.

In addition to maintaining a strong presence at the conference itself, Ambyint hosted an exclusive breakfast seminar event, with the help of Amazon Web Services and channel partner Spartan Controls, at the elegant and historic Fairmont Palliser Hotel on the morning of Day 2. Jesse and Ryan both presented some of the latest research in the field of upstream process automation to a room of executives and decision-makers who were also attending the conference last week.
During the presentation, Ryan (pictured below) focused the conversation on the realities and challenges of data quality, the discrepancies between SCADA’s capabilities and the current demands of data architecture, and what is required of oil companies to implement AI and ML successfully. Jesse (also pictured below) followed up by detailing a case study, ‘Deploying Autonomy in Production Operations via Machine Learning,’ which concisely supported Ryan’s broader statements.
